Tagovailoa was diagnosed with a concussion and later travelled back with the team, but the incident drew attention to a league-NFLPA investigation into how the Dolphins responded when he seemed to suffer a concussion four days earlier.

The club followed the league's concussion protocol, but the NFL and players' union agreed to change the rules to ban a player from returning to play if he showed ataxia, impaired balance or coordination caused by brain or nerve damage.

Under the old policy, players with "gross motor instability" (difficulty getting up or walking) could return to play if specialists found an orthopaedic cause. Tagovailoa was sacked Dec. 25 and diagnosed with a concussion.
