Natalia Gavrilița, the pro-Western Prime Minister of Moldova, unexpectedly resigned on Friday.

The resignation came amid a series of crises that have impacted her 18-month tenure, including inflation, an energy crisis, and an influx of Ukrainian refugees.

Hours before her resignation, Moldova summoned Russia's ambassador to condemn the recent Russian violation of its airspace.

Gavrilița cited the "crises caused by Russian aggression in Ukraine" as a factor in her resignation.

She took over the government with a mandate to tackle corruption and bring the country closer to the EU.

The government was immediately faced with energy blackmail from Russia, which significantly reduced its natural gas deliveries to Moldova.

The Moldovan President, Maia Sandu, nominated Dorin Recean, a presidential aide and former interior minister, to replace Gavrilița.

Recean has 15 days to form a government and present it to parliament for a vote.

Recean's priorities for the new government are order and discipline, a new life and economy, and peace and stability.

Tensions between Russia and Moldova have intensified since the war in Ukraine began.

Russia has troops stationed in the breakaway region of Transnistria, which is recognized as part of Moldova.

Last year, both Moldova and Ukraine were granted EU candidate status.

Gavrilița's resignation came after a Russian missile violated Moldova's airspace and plans by Moscow's security services to undermine the Moldovan state were revealed.

Gavrilița said that Moldova is expected with open arms in the EU and has friends, but if the government had the same support at home, it would have progressed faster.

Last autumn, protesters took to the streets of Chisinau calling for the resignation of Sandu and the government.

However, the winter has been milder than expected and Moldova has managed to reduce its energy reliance on Russia by using a pipeline connecting to Romania.

Gavrilița highlighted the steps towards ensuring energy independence of the country, including the start of construction on new electrical lines to connect with Romania, in her leaving address.
