Revel's Superhubs: Revolutionizing EV Charging In New York City

There are 2 million cars registered to New York City households, which could benefit from switching to electric vehicles.

Revel, a Brooklyn-based ride-hailing service, is expanding into the charging business with plans to build five Superhub fast-charging sites across the city.

The hubs will add another 136 charging stations and will serve any EV, not just Revel’s ride-hailing vehicles.

The addition of these charging stations will triple fast-charging access in New York City and make the Maspeth Superhub the largest public fast-charging station in the Western Hemisphere.

EV growth is happening in New York City, with about 19,000 EVs registered in New York City’s five boroughs as of early February.

The current charging infrastructure leaves a lot to be desired, but Revel’s Superhubs could provide relief for EV owners in the city.

EV adoption is slowed by the lack of infrastructure, but building that infrastructure is contingent on EV demand, creating a classic chicken-and-egg problem.

Revel hopes to counter this problem with their expansion into the charging business.

These fast-charging stations are capable of at least 150kW and should be able to power an EV to near-full levels in just 10 to 20 minutes, depending on the vehicle’s capabilities.

The addition of these charging stations will also be a boon to Revel’s own expansion plans as well as the scores of Uber and Lyft ride-hail vehicles that Mayor Eric Adams wants to be all-electric by 2030.

Revel’s Red Hook Recharge Zone will make the Red Hook community more resilient during extreme weather events by backing up the local grid during peak demand and potential blackout situations.

Revel is notable for paying its drivers as employees, not independent contractors as Lyft and Uber infamously do.

With EV registrations in parts of the greater metro area seeing triple-digit growth since 2020, all of those people will need more charging options sooner than later.

Revel's expansion into the charging business is a big move for the company, which now operates its moped business in several cities and its electric ride-hail service in New York and parts of New Jersey.

The addition of more charging stations could be the catalyst for increased EV adoption in New York City, leading to a cleaner, greener future.
