The Athens-Clarke County Police Department has obtained an arrest warrant for Jalen Carter, a top NFL draft prospect, in connection with a fatal crash that claimed the lives of a Georgia football player and a recruiting staffer in January.

The police department is seeking to arrest Carter for reckless driving and racing, which are both misdemeanour charges, as part of their investigation into the fatal crash.

Carter and Chandler LeCroy, the recruiting staffer who died in the crash, were driving in a manner consistent with racing prior to the accident, according to the police.

LeCroy's vehicle was travelling at a speed of 104 miles per hour, which is more than double the posted speed limit of 40 mph, at the time of the crash.

Carter, who is expected to be a top-five pick in next month's NFL draft, has stated that he will return to Georgia to face the charges and make certain that the complete and accurate truth is presented.

The Athens police department has been in contact with Carter's representatives, and it is expected that he will turn himself in.

The charges against Carter are deeply concerning, according to Georgia football coach Kirby Smart, who is still struggling to cope with the loss of two members of the community.

The fatal crash occurred on a road south of Athens, Georgia, where the University of Georgia is located, at around 2:45 a.m. ET on Jan. 15.

LeCroy's vehicle, a 2021 Ford Expedition, hit two utility poles and two trees before coming to rest outside an apartment unit.

LeCroy had a blood alcohol concentration of .197, which is well above the legal limit in Georgia, according to the police.

Investigators believe that alcohol impairment, racing, reckless driving, and speed were significant contributing factors to the crash.

Two other passengers in LeCroy's vehicle, Georgia offensive lineman Warren McClendon and recruiting staffer Victoria Tory Bowles, sustained injuries in the crash.

Carter, who is 21 years old, was planning to participate in interviews at the NFL scouting combine this week but will not work out for teams.

Authorities believe that alcohol played a role in the crash, which occurred just hours after the Georgia Bulldogs celebrated their second consecutive national championship in a parade through campus.

The evidence shows that both vehicles were switching between lanes, driving in opposite lanes of travel, and driving at high rates of speed, in an apparent attempt to outdistance each other.
