The sequel, which is still untitled, will premiere in December on the Paramount cable network, which also televises “Yellowstone.”

Taylor Sheridan, the series creator, launched a phenomenon behind Costner, who plays Montana rancher John Dutton.

The opening of the fifth season of “Yellowstone” last November was seen by 12.1 million viewers on the night of its debut, making it the most-watched scripted series last fall.

Costner told The Associated Press last fall that they were able to create a show that didn’t start out being popular but did it on its own terms.

“Yellowstone” will wrap up with new episodes airing in November, but it's not clear how many.

It’s not certain whether Costner will participate in the new episodes of “Yellowstone” following reports that he may want out of the series.

Paramount would not comment on that Friday but said that Kevin Costner is a big part of ‘Yellowstone’ and they hope that’s the case for a long time to come.

The new series will be picking up where “Yellowstone” leaves off in another epic tale, said David Glasser, CEO of 101 Studios, which produces “Yellowstone” with MTV Entertainment.

While the series hasn’t been named, the word “Yellowstone” will be part of the title.

Paramount has denied published reports that actor Matthew McConaughey is signed to star in the sequel, but a spokesperson said Friday that McConaughey “is a phenomenal talent with whom we’d love to partner.”

Following its debut on the cable network, the sequel will also air on the Paramount+ streaming network.

“Yellowstone” streams on NBC Universal’s Peacock service, owned by Comcast, meaning a big chunk of revenue created by the popular drama has been going elsewhere.

The announcement of the “Yellowstone” sequel comes after months of speculation that Kevin Costner would be leaving the series.

It was reported that Costner’s desire to focus on the epic two-part Western feature “Horizon” would seriously impact his availability to film “Yellowstone.”

“Yellowstone” has been the cornerstone on which the producers have launched an entire universe of global hits, including “1883” and “Tulsa King.”

The new sequel will be another big hit, thanks to the brilliant creative mind of Taylor Sheridan and the incredible casts who bring these shows to life, said Chris McCarthy, president & CEO of Showtime and MTV Entertainment Studios.

The “Yellowstone” prequels “1883” and “1923,” as well as the shows “Mayor of Kingstown” and “Tulsa King,” were also launched under Taylor Sheridan's overall deal with Paramount.

Sheridan also has upcoming shows like “Lioness,” “Land Man,” and “Lawmen: Bass Reeves,” with several more in development.
